Board of Governors

Message from the Chair of the Board, Professor Tom Crick MBE

Digital skills, computing education and artificial intelligence are now central to individual opportunity, economic growth and wider social progress. As technology continues to reshape the way we live, learn and work, it is essential that people of all ages and backgrounds have access to high-quality education that builds the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate fully in an increasingly digital society.

School of Coding & AI has an important role to play in this mission. Its work spans foundational digital literacy, coding and computing education, through to more advanced technical skills in software development, computational thinking and applied AI, helping learners to develop capabilities that are relevant today and resilient for the future. Just as importantly, the organisation is committed to widening participation, supporting lifelong learning, and creating practical pathways into further education, employment and the skills pipeline needed for an increasingly digital economy.

As Chair of the Board, I am pleased to work with a committed group of governors and advisers who bring a broad range of expertise across education, technology, enterprise and public service. The Board’s role is to support the organisation’s strategic direction, strengthen governance, and ensure that School of Coding & AI continues to grow in a sustainable, responsible and impactful way. That means maintaining a clear focus on quality, integrity, accountability and outcomes for learners, partners and the communities we serve.

The opportunities presented by AI and other emerging technologies are substantial, but they also bring important responsibilities. Education in digital technologies and AI must be human-centred and responsible. It should empower people not only to use technology, but to question it, shape it and apply it with confidence, judgement and agency. School of Coding & AI is well placed to contribute to this agenda by building digital confidence and practical skills, supporting individuals and organisations to navigate technological change with purpose.

Digital skills are part of the wider social and economic infrastructure needed for a more inclusive, productive and resilient future. I look forward to supporting the continued development of School of Coding & AI as it expands its reach, strengthens its impact and contributes to a more capable and responsible digital society.

About the Board of Governors

School of Coding & AI operates within a governance framework designed to promote effective leadership, accountability, educational excellence, and long-term sustainability. The framework establishes clear responsibilities between the Board of Governors, the Academic Board, and the Executive Leadership Team, ensuring appropriate oversight across all areas of the organisation.

The Board of Governors is the principal governing body of School of Coding & AI. It provides strategic leadership and independent oversight, helping to ensure that the organisation remains focused on its mission of empowering learners with the digital, technical, and artificial intelligence skills needed for the future. The Board is responsible for setting strategic direction, monitoring organisational performance, overseeing financial sustainability, and ensuring robust arrangements for governance, safeguarding, risk management, and compliance.

The Board brings together individuals with expertise from a range of sectors, including education, technology, artificial intelligence, business, finance, public service, and community engagement. The majority of governors are independent members who provide external perspectives, professional experience, and constructive challenge to support effective decision-making and organisational growth.

The role of Chair of Governors is separate from that of the Chief Executive Officer. The Chair leads the Board and ensures that governors fulfil their responsibilities effectively, while the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of School of Coding & AI.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the organisation’s senior executive and is responsible for implementing the strategic priorities agreed by the Board. The CEO leads the Executive Leadership Team and is accountable for operational performance, educational delivery, organisational development, partnerships, and the effective use of resources.

The Executive Leadership Team supports the CEO in delivering the organisation’s strategy and objectives. The team oversees programme delivery, learner outcomes, safeguarding, quality assurance, financial performance, stakeholder engagement, and organisational operations. Regular reports on performance, risk, and strategic progress are reviewed by the Board of Governors to ensure transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The Academic Board provides oversight and guidance on academic and educational matters. Its responsibilities include curriculum development, teaching and learning standards, quality assurance, learner achievement, educational innovation, and ensuring that programmes remain aligned with industry needs and emerging developments in technology and artificial intelligence. The Academic Board plays an important advisory role, helping to ensure that School of Coding & AI maintains high standards of educational quality and learner success.

Through the combined efforts of the Board of Governors, Academic Board, and Executive Leadership Team, School of Coding & AI seeks to deliver meaningful educational impact while maintaining the highest standards of governance, integrity, and public trust.
